Our SEN Support Team

At Oakmeadow, we have a wealth of knowledge and expertise amongst our dedicated members of staff who support children with SEN. More importantly we have the shared desire to see all children achieve their potential by applying our expertise to help reduce barriers to learning that a number of children often have.
 
All staff members receive professional development in areas of Special Educational Needs on a regular basis and are given the opportunity to gain further knowledge and understanding in specific areas relevant to their experience and developmental needs of children and the school.

    Assistant Headteacher, SENCo

    I became SENCo at Oakmeadow in 2014 and achieved my National Award for Special Needs coordinator qualification in 2015.
    From the outset of my teaching career, I have always had the desire to see all children achieve and most importantly enjoy the experience of coming to school. Sadly, in some schools, not all children do. Being the school's SENCO, gives me the unique opportunity to work with a range of our children and families across the entire school. I am passionate about all children deserving and receiving the same opportunities to help them make progress and achieve. In this role, I can introduce and drive initiatives to make a difference, working with our highly experienced SEN team to ensure Oakmeadow strives to provide an outstanding inclusive education for all our children.

    As a headteacher, I think it’s immensely important to have a real understanding of SEND, a deep and thorough knowledge of intervention and ensure the school has a robust system of assessment, has rigour in it's approach to supporting every child and a dogged determination to secure additional and external provision as and when needed.
    The experience I’ve had as a SENDCO for 14 years, as a head of mini school at a secondary school for 2 years and experiences in multi language schools in London, enable me to bring a wide knowledge to the SEND team at Oakmeadow, a true understanding of additional needs and a passion to ensure we support our families and children to the highest level.
    At Oakmeadow we have a team with a wealth of knowledge, experience and commitment and I feel a real privilege in playing a part in that.

    Family Inclusion & Safeguarding Lead

    I have been working here at Oakmeadow for the past 7 years now. My job title is Family Inclusion, Behaviour and Safeguarding Lead. As the title suggests, the role is varied and busy and no two days are ever the same. The main objective of the role is to ensure that all our children at Oakmeadow are able to successfully access the curriculum, the learning and the social activities; enabling children regardless of their ability, gender, race or social standing to reach their full potential.
    Here at Oakmeadow, we understand that sometimes, some of our families may need some additional support to make sure that our children are able to do their best, achieve and be happy both in school and at home. To this end, families can access support via our Early Help process. As Family Inclusion Lead, this is my area of expertise. Early Help support can range from, an informal chat and signposting to a universal service eg, Autism West Midlands, BEAM, Parenting team and other community-based support networks, to more intense support i.e. Early Help meeting at school with myself and in some cases a referral to an outside agency for more targeted work.
    I am an Understanding Your Child facilitator and together with my colleague Lisa Oliver, regularly deliver the 10 week parenting program here at Oakmeadow.
    Previously to working at Oakmeadow, I worked as an Inclusion & behaviour mentor for the Learning & Behaviour team at Telford & Wrekin, the main purpose of the role was to support children who found attending school challenging and needed additional support and mentoring to enjoy and achieve at school. I gained many transferable skills during my time as an Inclusion &Behaviour mentor which support my practice here at Oakmeadow.
    I qualified with the Nurture Network as a Nurture practitioner about 10 years ago and it is an area of my experience that I can apply to my current role as Oakmeadow has a strong nurturing ethos.
    As Family Inclusion lead, I manage the pastoral team and hub from “The Meadows” where we have created and developed a safe space that is nurturing and supportive of our children’s Social, Emotional & Mental health needs. The work and additional intervention that is delivered in The Meadows compliments and sits comfortably within our Recovery and Resilience program.
    CPD
    I am currently working towards a diploma in Mindfulness practice for children, I am thoroughly enjoying the course and I am looking forward to sharing these new skills with the children in Oakmeadow.
    I will shortly be embarking on a further training course to become a MAPA (Managing Actual &Potential Aggression) trainer enabling me to support and train my colleagues in identifying, deescalating and managing potential challenging behaviour.
    Finally, as Safeguarding Lead , I support our Senior Leadership team with Child Protection and Safeguarding, working closely with them in this area to ensure that we have effective procedures and processes in place to effectively safeguard the children, colleagues and families of Oakmeadow.

  • Mrs Sharon Teckoe

    SEN Learning Assistant

    I am part of a dedicated team of staff who enjoy working with those children who need additional support to help them achieve their potential . I have worked at Oakmeadow for more than seventeen years. I first started working as a cover TA in a class for children with SEN. I later supported a pupil with a severe medical condition. During this time, my compassion for and empathy towards others’ needs developed.
    Throughout my time at Oakmeadow, I have supported numerous children with a diverse range of needs. I am experienced in carrying out regular intervention groups including SNIPS, Toe by Toe, Beat Dyslexia, targeted provision, Cool Kids, Speed Up and tailored games to improve processing skills. I am also trained to test children for visual stress. I have my level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification . Over the years, I have had the pleasure of joining children on school residential trips, such as at Arthog and Pioneer Centre. I am currently Ladybird Breakfast Club Lead and thoroughly enjoy interacting with the younger children.
    Outside school, I like to make birthday cakes, walk my dogs and go to watch Liverpool play and win! When I'm not with my grandchildren, I love reading a good crime or historical fiction book.

    SEN Learning Assistant

    I was lucky enough to have joined the team at Oakmeadow in September 2015! Oakmeadow is a fantastic school and I am privileged to be a part of it.
    Most of my experience has centred around working with children with particular and often complicated SEN needs, who may find the school day challenging.
    I have also delivered phonics interventions to KS1 and Lower Key Stage 2 children.
    Outside school, I love playing sports. I used to play football but after two knee operations I thought it was time to hang up my boots, but I enjoy watching it on the television! I play netball for a team in Shrewsbury and I also enjoy the odd trip to the gym.

  • Mrs Stephanie Felton

    Level 3 SEN Learning Assistant

    I have worked as a teaching assistant for 22 years. I started at Longmeadow School where I spent a very rewarding 6 years supporting children with a variety of SEND in a specific KS2 class. In 2004, I went
    to work at Severndale School for 3 years supporting children in KS1, a challenging but valuable experience where I learnt a great deal from the variety of professionals employed there. In 2007, I decided I wanted to return to a mainstream school supporting individual pupils in a class setting. I was fortunate to be offered a position back at Longmeadow school (subsequently Oakmeadow School) where I have proudly
    watched the children in my care grow socially, emotionally and academically and move on to their next educational setting.
    In my personal life, my husband and I have lived in Bayston Hill for over 30 years. I am a very proud mum of two hard working daughters and in our spare time we are involved in Girl guiding in Bayston Hill.

  • Miss Lisa Oliver

    Learning Assistant

    I have worked with children across all key stages within Oakmeadow, although we are a large school, we still have a family feel which I love. I have worked almost 11 years as a Teaching Assistant in the village of Bayston Hill. During this time I have received training in many areas of Special Educational Needs, particularly in Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I have a Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support in Teaching and Learning, also a Level 3 Elklan Speech and Language qualification for 5-11 years. I have also had training in Read Write Inc Phonics..
    I have recently completed The Solihull Approach - Understanding your child, a course designed to promote Emotional Health and Well-being. This proved to be very successful last term. Mrs Severn and myself will continue to deliver this worthwhile programme in school so if you are interested please drop us an email.
    I always like to be busy and have just enrolled myself on a Counselling course to increase my understanding of counselling skills and techniques.
    As a teaching assistant, I enjoy the challenge that each day brings, I am passionate about my role and believe that we can all make a difference.
    As a parent of two children (both whom have attended Oakmeadow), I understand how many parents feel about wanting the best for their children. Outside of school, most weekends are spent with my children watching their various sporting events or visiting Wales, where as a family, we love walking, cycling and fishing.

  • Miss Emma Stevenson

    Learning Assistant

    This is my sixth year of working at Oakmeadow. For all of that time I have been based in Key Stage 2 working and supporting children with specific needs. I have thoroughly enjoyed this role and I have strived to provide the thorough support that these children needed and deserve. Last year, I embarked on a new challenge and moved into Key Stage One as a classroom support assistant. I still carry out targeted interventions within class and across the Key Stage.
    I am currently studying at Wolverhampton University to gain a Foundation degree with the aim of becoming a teacher. I have already completed my Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education, within that course I chose to complete my work placements in a variety of settings (specialist and mainstream) and with children of all ages ranging from 3 months old to 19 years. This gave me a thorough insight into the different strategies and resources that I could use and it made me more confident to work across all year groups.
    I have attended various workshops and courses to support my role ,including ‘Autism Awareness’ ‘Attachment theory’ and ‘Speech and Language’ These have really helped me in both my 1:1 and Teaching Assistant roles.
    I feel I am a friendly, approachable person and I am always willing to help others in any way I can. I enjoy a lot of socialising with my friends and family, and also relaxing (by relaxing I mean participating in an afternoon nap after work!!) I love to sing and take my two hyper dogs on long walks.

    I have been a member of the Oakmeadow team since 2008 working across the Foundation stage. For five years, I have been ELKLAN level 3 trained, which enables me to support pupils with targeted speech, language and communication programmes. I am also a level 3 SEN learning assistant.
    Outside of school, I love spending time with my family. I am a keen gardener and enjoy salsa dancing.

  • Miss Elkie McMahon

    Learning Assistant

    I was lucky enough to join the Oakmeadow team in 2015 after completing my A Levels in photography, ICT and Health & Social care. I came to Oakmeadow as a Level 2 Teaching Assistant apprentice and have since completed my Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification. I love working at Oakmeadow and working alongside such a great team, who I have learnt such a lot from.
    I began my journey, working within the Early Years Foundation Stage as a class TA before being given the opportunity to work 1:1 with a child. This experience has taught me a lot and I learnt a lot from my colleagues. I am now based in year 1, working 1:1 with a different child which is a new and exciting challenge for me, but I can say that I have the most rewarding job in the world.
    In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and relaxing in front of the television. I love exploring and trying new things and so I spend my weekends finding new things to do.

    I have been part of the Oakmeadow team since 2005 and during this time have gained a wealth of experience, especially when working with children who have additional needs that often form barriers to their learning. Throughout KS1 and KS2 and more recently in early years, I have been privileged to work with a wide range of children who have additional needs arising from having autism, speech and language difficulties and ADHD. Every child is different and with that comes a rewarding challenge which I love.
    In my down time, I enjoy socialising with friends, working on my small holding and helping out with my five grandchildren.

    CBT Counsellor

    Hi my name is Val. I live locally in a rural village and have two sons, both in their twenties and two small dogs. I am from a farming background with a large supportive family. I have always been a part of the community and have achieved so much in organising activities etc. for the children. I enjoy walking my dogs, making crafts and the countryside.
    I worked at Condover Pre School and volunteered at the primary school for 10yrs. I had previously gained my Diploma in Human Development and Child Care at my local college.
    When my boys were young, I became a volunteer for the Children’s Country Holiday Fund. We were hosts to a child from London, which the charity would choose from a deprived area or home within London. He/she would stay with us for two weeks, basically to have some, one- on- one time with a family and to enjoy all that the countryside had to offer. This would happen once a year in the summer and continued for 6yrs.
    In 2004, as a family, we were approved foster shared carers with Shropshire County Council alongside Barnardos. The training and preparation took several months and then once we were approved, we would offer shared care to a child with a form of disability. I also attended college and trained as an Holistic Therapist during this time (Reflexology, Rekei, Indian Head Massage) and set up my own little salon within the village I lived.
    After 9 yrs, due to health conditions (osteoarthritis with several joint replacements), I finished full time in the salon and focused on training to be a counsellor, as I have always had an interest in mental health and well-being.
    I gained my qualification with a distinction as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist (CBT) in 2015 and started work for the charity Shropshire Mind after fortunately obtaining the position as Lone Crisis Helpline Call Handler, at the NHS mental health hospital, The Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury. I would give my professional support for anyone with mental health problems. This would involve talking to worried, frustrated, angered, suicidal and distraught callers, or their family, by calming them down. i would also signpost the caller to the appropriate help and support and I would talk them through distraction and relaxation techniques. This was without fear of recognition or judgement; I was also working alongside, the crisis and triage team, shrop doc and the police. I also became support worker at Mind, organising and running the drop in session, activities and the ladies well-being group.
    What is CBT ?
    Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of talking treatment which focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviour by teaching you coping skills for dealing with different problems. I work with adults and children.
    Within my position at Oakmeadow, I use CBT to help improve a child’s moods, anxiety and behaviour by examining confused or distorted patterns of thinking. As a CBT therapist I would teach and encourage the child to identify and challenge any negative thinking patterns and behaviour which may be causing them difficulties. I then help the child replace this thinking with thoughts that result in more appropriate feelings and behaviours.
    I give praise and support as the child learns. My role is to help the child believe in themselves and find their strengths.
    I am a professional and friendly therapist I have a good sense of humour and always aim to make all the sessions fun and importantly listen to the child, with no judgement and with a mindful approach during this one- to- one time.
    I am passionate about helping all my clients find solutions to their problems, enabling them to feel more in control and less anxious. I help clients to resolve a wide range of issues which may including stress, depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, relationship issues, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder. post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, eating disorders, sleep problems or bereavement. I also assist clients with coping strategies, coming to terms with events in their lives, challenging negative unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
    Communication, confidentiality, trust and safe guarding are very important to me. I offer a listening ear, a safe place to explore the thoughts and feelings, coping strategies and help to find a way forward.
