RE - The Oakmeadow Way

At Oakmeadow, we believe that all children should develop their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of religious experiences, insights, beliefs and practices. This in turn will enable them to think about their own beliefs and philosophy, as well as respect the practices and beliefs from the major world faiths. As a Church of England school, there is an emphasis on Christianity and we have a strong link with our local Anglican church, Christ Church Bayston Hill. They provide our children with enriching activities, such as weekly worship times, workshops and a monthly church service at Christ Church to which families are warmly invited.

Through our RE curriculum we aim to inspire children to learn about the diverse religions and beliefs, which have influenced the lives of millions of people. RE plays an important role in promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our children. We believe they should learn more about themselves and their place in the world and reflect on the challenging questions that RE provokes. We develop an awareness of Christianity alongside other religions and consider how these differing beliefs impact on their lives and the lives of others. All children are encouraged to consider the relationship that they may develop with the concept of self, others, beauty and beyond.

The RE curriculum we follow is based on the key questions from the Shropshire Agreed Syllabus, which we implement predominantly through Understanding Christianity. We use an enquiry-based approach to learn about some of the main world religions. We equip children to reflect on and explore questions that different religions provoke. We support children in becoming empathetic, confident students who can discuss, debate, ask questions and seek answers in a compassionate way. The half-termly key questions help to start challenging and meaningful discussions, as well as provide opportunities for children to gain an insight into their own beliefs and values. The children develop a deeper appreciation of the spiritual, moral and natural world around them through exploring artefacts, books, videos, pictures, art and music, as well as engaging in workshops, stories, visitors and visits. We recognise days such as World Religion Day, which introduce our children to a wider range of religions beyond our curriculum. We also make cross-curricular links across our other subjects, offering our children a holistic approach to their learning.
