Science has been a true passion of mine from a very young age. Science is the subject where 'why?' is the best phrase to use. There is no better feeling than allowing children to explore and discover new scientific concepts and enjoy that 'light bulb' moment we all aspire for. I studied both Biology and Chemistry at A-Level, so I have a secure understanding of scientific knowledge whilst developing the 'working scientifically' framework. During my undergraduate degree, I completed my dissertation focusing on the gender differences within science attitudes across the primary setting. This was an incredibly interesting research topic which fueled my continued love that science is for all. I am excited to continue driving science forward at Oakmeadow.
Science – The Oakmeadow Way
At Oakmeadow, we recognise that in an increasingly scientific and technological age children need to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to better prepare them for modern life.
Young children are naturally curious and passionate about learning. At Oakmeadow we provide a stimulating science curriculum that nurtures children’s natural curiosity and their on-going intellectual development. We aim to provide a mixture of knowledge and factual based learning with a hands-on, enquiry-based approach where children will experience the joy of having wonderful ideas, exploration and investigation – that is, they joy of finding out.
We recognise that our school grounds and local community offer a rich resource which we can utilise to inspire and effectively meet the requirements of the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum Programmes of Study and we try to use as much as possible.
A high-quality Science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and we aspire for all our pupils to be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
Real-life experiences are a fundamental part of our approach. Every year, the school participates in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths) Week. This allows the children to fully immerse themselves into problem solving and creating. The aim is to inspire children to develop their STEAM skills by encouraging them to get involved in educational and fun challenges.
We adopt a whole school approach to planning science investigations so that the children understand the processes that involve composing a scientific question, considering variables, constant factors, planning the exploration and making reasoned predictions. Our whole school approach also ensures the progression of skills as they are ‘looking through the same lens’ throughout their time here.
